so has anyone jumped on this??? dave?

Of course. My friend and I both got an MSI Wind for $360 after rebate (originally priced $500, amazon sells it for $479.99)
Mine would have been cheaper by another $50 if I ordered out of state instead (I had a $50 off eBay coupon).
My friend's was bought from ANTonline, their warehouse is in CA and they don't charge sales tax. We both ordered this past Friday and got them today.
I am thinking of buying more stuff, any suggestions? Wii, PS3, Xbox360, DS Lite, etc.
They have $500 Visa prepaid cards marked up to $600, so $420 (16% off).
David
Wed, 22 Oct 2008 17:36:13 +0000
really? aww man...ok. i have to compete so i guess i'll need to get one too. i'm looking at the ps3 80gb metal gear solid 4 bundle. but it says 25% off not 35% off.
did you already get your money back?
hey.. which wind did you get?
charlie
Wed, 22 Oct 2008 20:15:48 +0000
it takes 60 days to get the rebate.
looks like it's only 25% now. it was still 30% this morning.
we got the msi wind u100-279us 10-Inch Mini Laptop (1.6 GHz Intel Atom, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 6 Cell Battery, 802.11 b/g/n+BT, XP Home)
the 6-cell battery lasts 5 hours. we both got this to run os x leopard.
$506.59 x 0.75 + $12.38 = $392.32
if you received the ebay 10% off coupon "CFALLSAVINGS10P" in your mail, you can knock another $50 off.
David
Wed, 22 Oct 2008 20:37:51 +0000
ya. i got the 10% ebay coupon. man all of the specs on the msi's look the same. but they are all different part numbers. even the one you listed isn't on their website but the specs are the same. and the top 2 models have the exact same specs on their site but again part numbers are different. how lame. i wonder if it's for different countries.. US, CA, but what's MY? malaysia? confusing. even this one (u100-257CA) has the same spec as u100-279us.
charlie
Wed, 22 Oct 2008 20:46:20 +0000
yeah, i think the 2-letter suffix is the country.
their model numbers make no sense to me whatsoever.
the one we got (u100-279us) appears to be best bang for the buck. 160GB, 6-Cell, Gigabit, 802.11b/g/n.
there's a black version (i think it's U100-432US, but couldn't find it on ebay).
the other models all have different combos of smaller hard drives, 3-cell battery, 10/100 ethernet and 802.11b/g.
the canadian model you mentioned has 802.11b/g and 10/100 ethernet.

darn. i don't want white. i want black. pink or love. lol... ok, really black. i guess i'll settle for white and airbrush it. =P
wow.. there are so many things i want to buy... i need a new camera lens.. .ps3... receiver... tvs... crap!
charlie
Thu, 23 Oct 2008 10:02:50 +0000
so, you are going to get it?
Paul
Thu, 23 Oct 2008 11:36:07 +0000
the peer pressure is way more than i can bear. i have to get one now. you both got the white ones i take it. did you get leopard on it? is it as instant on and cool as the videos look? i want to get the black one. i'm thinking about getting one for my sister with windows on it, once she saw my asus she keeps whining about having a lightweight subnotebook for taking meeting notes.
charlie
Thu, 23 Oct 2008 11:54:27 +0000
black is whack, white is right... haha.... tell your sister she can buy the asus eee off me :)
i got leopard installed, still trying to get wifi working, i might need to get a replacement wifi card.
the xbench benchmark appears to be comparable to a macbook air.
instant on from sleep seems to work.
if you order now, it'll arrive on friday.
David
Thu, 23 Oct 2008 12:49:34 +0000
get it by friday?? that's fast. but i can get black if i buy the MY version @$500+20 ship. dammit. ok. i'm airbrushing the white. multiwavevideo seems to have lots of winds and they are in walnut, i should get it just as fast. =T
it doesn't say anything about memory. do you know what the max memory i can put in it is?
charlie
Thu, 23 Oct 2008 14:09:40 +0000
nevermind.. got my answer about the memory. 2GB.
MSI: Upgrading Wind RAM Voids Warranty
charlie
Thu, 23 Oct 2008 15:29:52 +0000
multiwavevideo and techtreasure are both fronts for mwave.com. i got mine from techtreasure.
buy it from antonline, you don't have to pay sales tax (~$40), and they shipped out from fontana, ca.
yeah, 2GB. There're 2 slots (one inaccessible). You just have to get 1 stick of 1G DDR2 667 (PC-5300) SODIMM to bump it up to 2G.
i am surprised how snappy os x runs with just 1G on this. of course, i haven't installed vmware fusion yet.
David

It's great to see you guys helping the economy.
I might try to get one through this deal . . . just so that I can have a Mac to develop software for. Thanks for the deal, David.

Kalyway is the distro used by the Aussie guy in the video. It works on all sorts of supported hardware.
There's also a MSI Wind specific one called MSIWindosx86, which I downloaded from the newsgroups. This is the one I used.
There's a way to install from the retail Leopard disc, but it requires another distro (http://wind-osx86.wikispaces.com/Leopard+Retail+DVD)

Thu, 23 Oct 2008 20:54:58 +0000
I put mine to sleep (sounds so cruel) last night with 55 mins left on the battery. It had 53 mins left when I woke it this morning. So it's not like the ASUS EEE where it drains the battery when it's asleep. I noticed the battery gets drained a lot faster (~2x) when I watch videos, much faster than my C2D Macbook Pro.
Charlie, I think my friend looked into the HP 2133. It's supposed to be a very well built machine, but it's underpowered with a VIA C7-M ULV. If (or when) they come out a version with an Intel Atom, this would be the netbook to get.
David
Thu, 23 Oct 2008 22:16:06 +0000
Does the Wind uses miniPCI WiFi card or does it use miniPCIe WiFi card? I read that it uses miniPCI, but I just want to confirm. Thanks.
Chieh Cheng
Thu, 23 Oct 2008 23:15:16 +0000
MiniPCI.
Charlie, you can use this as a headstart to your black Wind...

you don't have to buy a replacement wifi card. the stock one works fine under osx.

I just started reading through all the e-mails and details and stuff. I don't see a 30% banner or anything close to it. Do you need a live.com account for this deal to work?
Chieh Cheng

I bought it. After going through the process, you'll have to sign up for a CashBack account to get your rebate.

Do you guys know which wireless N router works with the stock WiFi card/chipset?
Chieh Cheng
Fri, 24 Oct 2008 16:22:12 +0000
did you get it from antonline on ebay? you should have gotten an email right away. along with the cashback email from microsoft in your ebay inbox.
i think the wind's wifi is 802.11n draft 2.0, so any routers that does 802.11n draft 2.0 should work.

I am thinking of buying more stuff, any suggestions? Wii, PS3, Xbox360, DS Lite, etc.
Your necessities?
It occurred to me to buy some necessities today. We were on our way to Target to get a second car seat. Then I realized that I could use this deal on a $150 car seat! So I just got this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Graco-Nautilus-3-in-1-Car-Seat-Matrix-FR . . .
Same price as retailers and free shipping. Should have waited for a deal on the first car seat . . . But that's the problem with having children. When they need it, they needed.
I've been eye'ing this Fujitsu Stylistic LT 500 Tablet PC Laptop Computer for about a year now. I might finally get it:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Fujitsu-Stylistic-LT-500-Tablet-PC-Lapto . . .
Here are more ideas for you . . . 50" flat screen TV, digital photo frame, gun console games, hard drives, replacement for broken stuff around your house/car, Christmas presents, birthday presents . . . Anything else?

Sat, 25 Oct 2008 19:14:05 +0000
ok. got mine U100-279US from ktiusapc. $499.99 + $19.99 shipping, no tax (NJ). minus $50 ebay cfall coupon, minus $125 cashback. = $344.98.
should get it probably by end of next week or week after.
charlie

I think you scored the most loot. I think everyone else just got the Wind.
I was debating whether to get some gift certificates from Amazon.
In the thread, they say it might come back by Black Friday. Hope it does, It sure beats waiting for hours in the cold and elbowing your way (or getting elbowed) for your prized items.
They also say it's cyclical, so 35% might come back eventually.

The MSI Wind was sitting at my door today, when I got home. It's quite a small computer. The extended battery raises the back a little bit, but I think I could deal with that. I'm very pleased.
I was disappointed that it doesn't have a hard drive bay cover. Because I had planned on installing Mac OS onto another 120 GB SATA drive that I have and swap between Mac OS and Windows on the fly . . . even in the field. Looks like that won't be possible now, as the whole back cover has to come off. In fact, to remove the drive, you'll have to remove the wireless card first. (Yah, I have already taken it apart, before even turning it on.)
As regards to the wireless card, it's a miniPCIe, rather than a miniPCI. That's fortunately, because I want to test a network problem I have on my gaming notebook.
I grabbed the original images of the hard drive. It's split into two partitions. Each one contains only about 90 MB of data. That's pretty small for a Windows installation. I see no files in either drive. I'm going to put it back together now and see how it boots up on only 180 MB of total data.
Chieh Cheng
Wed, 29 Oct 2008 04:04:30 +0000
i thought there were 3 partitions... i blew them out right away when i got it.
there's a recovery DVD in the box too, not sure if that has to be used in concert with the recovery partition.
a lot of people have 2 or 3 OSes installed on their wind. i might do the same if the need arises.
David
Wed, 29 Oct 2008 05:28:49 +0000
Yah . . . I put the MSI Wind together, let it boot and install Windows XP. Went to take a shower. In the shower, I realized my mistake. The meat is probably on a third partition that is unrecognized by Windows . . . perhaps ext3. I should have looked at it in Disk Management. Oh well. I guess I'll have to pull out the drive again and image the third partition under Linux.
So far, my baby had more time on the MSI Wind than I did. She saw it immediately walking through the house. And won't go to bed without playing with it. A brand new netbook's got snobs and boogers all over it. There are fingerprints on the webcam. And I think she broke the left touchpad button by pounding on the keyboard and the touchpad. The left touchpad is kinda hard to press now. I seem to remember it had the same tactical feedback like the right mouse button. But it's hard to tell now since I haven't gotten to use it as much as the baby. Kids . . .

ouch!
David
Wed, 29 Oct 2008 06:51:45 +0000
It's ok. I'm used to it now. Worse things can happen.
I'm looking for a way to put the bootable ISO image onto a bootable USB hard drive. I have a lot of those, just no USB DVD drive. :-( I don't know if these ideas will work:
Boot ISO image from hard disk?
Use Lilo or grub to mount and boot from ISO
By the way, I just checked . . . the 25% cashback offering is back. You might want to get on the bandwagon again before it's gone for good.
Chieh Cheng
Wed, 29 Oct 2008 06:56:59 +0000
i thought you could only run the deal once? no? or do you have to create a new paypal account and a new ms account to associate it with?
charlie
Wed, 29 Oct 2008 07:06:36 +0000
I think you can do it 12 times. I see the number 12 floating around a lot. Same accounts. The cashback just keeps adding up. And that's not counting if you order from other retailers (not eBay, not 25%), which I haven't done yet.
By the way, the shipping label says Miami, FL., rather than Fontana. But it got here pretty quick on FedEx Ground.
Did you get your Wind yet?
Chieh Cheng
Wed, 29 Oct 2008 07:11:14 +0000
mines left nj monday night. i'll probably get it by next week tuesday or so at this rate. they used usps. uhh... ya.
so it worked for you with the same account for the lumix?
charlie
Wed, 29 Oct 2008 08:48:55 +0000
yeah, 12 transactions, and they don't care what you're buying the items for...
http://pages.ebay.com/cashbackoffer/terms.html
David
Wed, 29 Oct 2008 10:39:33 +0000
Yup. Wind, Graco car seat, and Lumix all on the same eBay, PayPal, and CashBack accounts.
Just be careful when you check out on eBay. Before you confirm on you buy, it will tell you if the item qualifies for the CashBack. Sellers that do not go through the standard eBay/PayPal process (like their own PayPal payment system) do not qualify. It'll tell you if that is the case. I say read every page carefully as you go through the purchase.
In the case with the Lumix, the $430 seller with $15 shipping did not qualify. But another $470 seller with free shipping qualifies. Luckily the higher price seller included more stuff in the bundle to make it worth while.

Well, I installed Ext2 IFS, hoping to image the third hidden partition. After doing so, Ext2 IFS spotted it right away, but it turned out to be a FAT32 partition. I was able to mount it and make an image of it using DriveImage XML. Very strange that Windows XP doesn't automatically assign it a drive letter. I looked at Disk Management and it says the partition is "(EISA Configuration)". That's very strange as well. For a normal drive, it usually say "(System)".
I have an idea about the DVD drive. I have these USB to hard drive adapters. but it occurred to me that they're really USB to mass storage adapters. At least they've been marketed as such. So should work with a regular DVD drive. I guess I can pull one from my desktops and give it a try.
Anyway, I'm ready to install Mac OS X, but Halloween is in two days. So nothing might happen until then. We'll see.
